Ages 8-12 / Grades 3-6

We’re a LOGOS Community Partner!
Fall into Nature! Get ready to explore, play, learn and have an awesome outdoor adventure! You may register for as many or as few classes as you would like to attend. Tuesdays, 1-4pm.
A series of science-based classes will be held in various natural areas around the Rogue Valley. Maximum group size: 12. $30/week (3 hr class - all expenses included) Additional info. below.

Week 1 - Creek Critters - FREE

Dip your net into Little Butte Creek in search of insects, and other macroinvertebrates. We’ll use the scientific method to investigate the water quality, clarity, and more. Wear shoes you can get wet!

Week 2 - Butterflies and Other Bugs

We’ll use sweepnets to catch and release a variety of insects in the meadow, then set up a habitat to raise our own painted lady butterflies from larva to adult!

Week 3 - Geology Rocks!

Learn about the Rock Cycle, play a game, and crack open a geode to keep. We’ll be hiking and exploring, stopping along the way for investigations and our lunch break!

Week 4 - Grizzly Peak Geology Hike

Kids, come take a 3-mile trek around Grizzly Peak. We’ll shorten the longer hike and visit the basalt outcropping at the summit, a spectacular view stop, the high meadow, and learn about geology in our valley! Register below.

Week 5 - Trees, Please

Learn the basics of tree identification, then put your skills to the test. We’ll collect and preserve leaves in our own leaf presses, along with games and more! Register below.

Week 6 - Trees Champs

Make your own clinometer to keep, and use it to find the height of trees! We’ll even put our new skills to the test to see which trees are the largest of their species. Register below.

Week 7 - All Tied Up in Knots

We’ll make strong cordage (rope) with natural fibers, then learn to tie three (or more) essential knots you will use for a lifetime! Register below.

Week 8 - Super Survival Shelters

Surviving the elements could save your life! We’ll check out the woodrat nests, then make debris huts and other shelters of our own using knots we have learned. Register below.

Week 9 - Finding Your Way

Learn tricks to finding directions and how to use a map and compass together. Try these new skills out on a treasure hunt. Register below.

Week 10 - Night Sky Wonders

Build your own night sky wheel featuring common winter features including the Big Dipper, Orion, the North Star, and more. Make new star stories and hear ancient ones! Register below.

Week 11 - Early Winter Night Hike

Bring a headlamp or flashlight, wear sturdy shoes, and dress warmly. We’ll enjoy a night hike in the Ashland Watershed, first quarter moon, and features from our sky wheel. Hot cocoa and more! NOTE Evening Time on Wednesday! Register below.

Week 12 - Make Up Day

Please keep this date open for make-up due to instructor absence, severe weather, etc. No additional charge.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Ages: 3rd-6th graders (8-12 years…must be 8 years old by Sept. 1st, 2019)
When: Wednesday from 10am-1pm - unless otherwise noted. Please be on time.
Location: Each venue within approx. 30 minutes of Talent, OR. Possibilities include Earth Teach Forest Park, Lithia Park, Grizzly Peak, and others.
Note to Parents: This is a drop-off program, although you are always welcome to stay. However, for safety purposes, we will need at least ONE parent to commit to attend each session.
You will be able to sign-up for your week/s when registering.
Bring: Medical and Release form to first class, sack lunch or snack, weather-ready layers, rain gear, hiking boots, water bottle (we will have refills), day pack for gear.
Fee: $30 per week (per child) (Includes personal nature journal, name tag, and all supplies.) Please note, you may register for as many weeks as you would like. Minimum: 3 students for class to be held.
